Grain farming is a central pillar of Ontario’s economy, employing more than 92,000 Canadians, generating over $2billion in annual tax revenue for governments, and representing over $27 billion in economic output annually. But much of that activity depends on free and fair trade with the United States. In 2024 alone, Ontario’s grain farmers exported billions worth of grain products to the U.S. and around the world, while relying on global partners for affordable inputs like fertilizer, seed, and farming equipment that keep Canadian grain farmers growing. If that trade relationship is compromised, Canada needs to invest in and explore new market opportunities for the grain supply. These opportunities will not only protect farming communities from the volatility of a trade war but will fortify the Canadian economy long-term, leveraging our considerable strength as a grain-growing country to diversify our markets and become less reliant on an increasingly unpredictable trade partner, all while shoring up our domestic processing and supply chains, and ensuring Canadians always have access to high-quality, affordable grain production. As a constituent in your riding, I’m calling on you to support the following efforts that will strengthen the Canadian economy and make Canadian farmers, the food supply, and families less susceptible to the volatility in the world: - Explore New Markets: Protect and grow opportunities in China, the Asia Pacific, Central and South America, and the EU and UK as trade relationships change. - Recognize New Opportunities: Recognize the significance of renewable fuels as both a market for Ontario grain and a low-carbon fuel source, and increase investment to build this market for future growth. - Build Up Domestic Processing: Invest in Ontario’s food and beverage processing and export capacity, establish an equitable distribution of research funding to support innovation in the eastern grain sector, restore funding in plant breeding. Thank you for your attention to this matter and I hope to see you championing these ideas on Parliament Hill.
