Grain farming is a way of life in rural Ontario, producing over 16,000,000 tonnes of barley, corn, oats, soybeans, and wheat that are used to make food we eat everyday. It’s also a rural economic engine, employing over 92,000 Canadians, generating over $2 billion in tax revenue for governments, and representing over $27 billion in economic output annually. Uncertainty is a risk that farmers cannot afford. To keep costs in line and grain farming affordable, farmers have relied heavily on trade with the U.S. for critical imports like fertilizer, farm machinery, and seed, which are inputs essential to growing Canada’s crops. If that trade relationship is compromised, Canada needs to prioritize the production of affordable, high-quality Canadian grains right here at home. In the U.S., congress is preparing to pass a Bill that would protect their farmers from this volatility and tight margins, giving them the certainty and stability they need to care for their crops. If Canada is going to protect its own supply chains, keep our grain production affordable, and keep our Canadian farmers farming, we need our government ensure a level playing field for our grain farmers. As my representative, I’m calling on you to support the following efforts that will protect Canada’s crops and help keep our grain production affordable: - Protect Against Uncertainty: Protect Ontario’s grain farmers and consumers from escalating prices and market volatility by providing 60% funding for the Risk Management Program and permanently raising the Advance Payments Program funding from $250,000 to $350,000. - Level The Playing Field: Return agriculture and agrifood funding to business risk management programs + Make Canadian Business Risk Management programs competitive with those in the U.S. - Strengthen Supply Chains: Direct stimulus funding to protect domestic processing, create new markets, and reinstate the Capital Cost Allowance and Accelerated Investment Incentive Program. With affordability top of mind for all Canadians, adopting these measures will not only protect a key Canadian industry but also give Canadians peace of mind that parliament is doing all it can to keep grain farmers competitive and their costs in line and protect the security of our supply chains. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing about these measures being enacted.
